Koi Pond Aeration – It’s All About Oxygen

The amount of oxygen in your Koi pond is an important factor. Koi pond aeration can help keep the oxygen within expectable levels. Normally you would not think you would have to worry about that in an outdoor pond.  But there are many factors that can and do contribute to an ever changing level of oxygen.

The proper term is dissolved oxygen. It’s important not only for your fish but also plants in the pond and various chemical processes including bacterial decomposition in the nitrogen cycle. Each pond will have its own biological oxygen demand. This is made up of the size and number of fish, bacterial activity and even the decomposition of plant material that may fall into the pond and not removed.

The amount of water that can be dissolved in the pond water is the result of several factors. The keep ones are water temperature, water movement or agitation (think aeration) and salinity. In freshwater ponds salinity is not a significant factor, so don’t worry about it.

Oxygen solubility is inversely affected by temperature. That is, as the temperature of the water rises, the amount of dissolved oxygen will go down.  In the warm summer months, low oxygen levels can become a problem. it’s very important to keep a watchful on the dissolved oxygen level in the pond. It’s best to keep oxygen concentrations at least  between 5.0 and 5.5 mg per liter.

Good Koi pond aeration is critical in helping to keep the oxygen concentration of the water at the right level. The idea is to keep the surface of the water moving. Without proper circulation, the oxygen level can drop quickly to unhealthy levels. The most common ways to keep the water moving is by using rock raceways, fountains and waterfalls.

It’s interesting to note that Koi fish will utilize more oxygen after they are fed. Combine that with feeding during times of the day when the water temperature is the highest can result in a large drop in oxygen level.

The oxygen levels will also be affected by the amount of algae in the pond. Large algae growths will produce oxygen in the daytime, but that same algae will deplete the oxygen level at night. Don’t let the algae growth get out of hand. Your Koi will thank you for it.

One of the best ways to make sure you have enough Koi pond aeration, getting a fountain for the pond. Not only are they a beautiful addition to the pond, but the spray increases the amount of surface area of the water,  helping to dissolve more oxygen.
